An update on writing programmes

It’s been a change in writing programmes I use since my last post on them. There I mentioned Ulysses, Scrivener and Word—from favourite to least favourite. And that do still apply. 

However, I am now using a different programme: 

Google Docs.  

Why am I using Google Docs? 

Well, for the simple reason that it is cross-platform. It’s also online, so I can log-in whenever I am, with whatever laptop or computer of iPad or phone I’m on. It works just as well on Mac as on Windows. 

Since my laptops (Macbook Pro and Macbook Air) are practically useless now since they’re so old and slow, and I have a gaming PC with Windows… it was what I went for. I can now write on the stationary computer at home, or on the computer at work, or I can write on my iPad. 

Ulysses and Scrivener are Mac software. I know, I know, there is a WIndows version of Scrivener and I did download that… but it sucks. It didn’t want to open my files because they were too new, so I had to download a beta version of the new Scrivener for Windows, but that’s still in testing, so not really something I want to rely on. 

Don’t get me wrong, I love both Ulysses and Scrivener. But unless I go strictly Apple again, I think I’ll stick to Google Docs for the foreseeable future. It’s easier when you have both a Windows PC and an Apple iPad. It syncs great and I honestly like it a lot better than Word. 

Do you need one more good reason to stick with Google Docs? 

It’s free! Ulysses requires a monthly or yearly subscription, and Scrivener costs money to buy—but if you spend the money, you’ll have Scrivener until they decide to release a new version and charge you more.  

Looking at it like this, I will rate the writing programmes as such: 

  1. Google Docs — because it’s free!
  2. Scrivener — because it requires only a one-time fee!
  3. Ulysses and Word — because they require monthly and yearly fees, which clearly sucks if you don’t have the money for it. 

There are other writing programmes out there. I looked into Typora a little, but that had a fee as well. So I went with trusty old Google Docs and I don’t regret it.
