When Characters Switch Things Around

Yesterday’s Tears was supposed to focus only on Josh and Damian, from the short stories Scarred Souls and Reunited, but a new main character also felt like introducing himself during the writing of it. His name is Matt, and he’s Damian’s younger cousin. Now, Matt and I had a plan once he decided to be a part of the book. It was nicely laid out there, the plan, and he was agreeable to it. Until he goes and changes his mind.

I had Matt’s love interest all figured out. He’s been there long before Matt came along, even. They totally wanted each other. Then comes another character, who was meant for another bloke, and he wants to be Matt’s friend. OK, sure, if he wants a new mate, who am I to deny him that?

I didn’t except what happened. I didn’t expect them to hook up and to actually like each other in that way. Nonetheless, they did and they messed up my entire outline completely. Not just the outline for this book but for the next one as well. Thanks a lot, lads, very helpful indeed, was my reaction to this. I was miffed, to say the least.

As it turns out, this was all just a switch of places, because the intended love interest for Matt suddenly wants to get it on with the intended love interest for Matt’s new love interest. This is confusing, isn’t it? Don’t worry, it is for me too. At least it worked out in the end. The lads are happy. I guess I can’t begrudge them being happy, right, even if their happiness did happen with the wrong person.
